Aberfeldy Street windows

Overview

Commission to encourage people to shop local and celebrate the end of lockdown at Aberfeldy Street in Poplar. Eight shopfronts were decorated with mural stickers. Community shops include a boxing gym, barber’s and pub.

Workshops

During three workshops, two Zoom, and one in-person class took place with Year 9 pupils from a local school, Langdon Park, to teach introduce the project, and ask for drawings, and ideas for each of the stores.

Execution

I added halftone and bright colours behind the children’s line drawing, to increase attention, and complement the existing frontage colours. I printed these on handcut decals placed on the outside of the windows. Handwritten text was added designed encouraging people to visit the shops, and add a theme throughout, and abstract shapes to unite the illustrations.

Collaboration with owners

Mock-ups were shown to the shop owners to check they were happy with the content of the drawings, and I checked with the owners they were comfortable with the placement.
