Dockside path signs

One of the 19 signs

Overview

The Royal Docks are a large post-industrial area in East London which had no public information. The challenge was to create improve wayfinding, introduce visitors to the history, local community and nature of the Royal Docks and aims to encourage more active exploration along the dock path.

Signage location choices

The mooring bollards along the length of the dock provided points that were both evenly spread, as well as allowing signs to be installed on railings both side. This provided long distance views of each sign walkers / cyclists from both directions to see each from both directions.

Visibility and material

Parts of the dockside are dark. Therefore highways-grade reflective material was used to increase visibility at night. Because the docks are open to the elements, aluminium signage solution was chosen, with non-corrosive attachments.

Community involvement
Workshops and interviews were held to help get local stories, and to give inspiration for illustration style.
