Royal Albert Wharf banners

Final mural

Challenge

Both help direct visitors, and create colour and identity for a new community in the east end of the Royal Docks in London.

Community involvement

I took a “sketch-and-stroll” walk around the local area from the local café, and then chatted over coffee to understand what they loved about the area. The participants wrote their ideas and sketches in the form of postcards.

Solution and response

After taking photos, and walking around the area sketching I created 20 lamppost banners which line the dock and entrance streets. These incorporate the quotes from the workshop as well as illustrated local sights and directions. I’ve had a really positive reaction that they have brightened up the place, and helped friends find their way.
