Welcome to the streets

Final mural

Challenge

The concept is to discourage flytipping in the streets of East Ham in East London. A council hotspot map was used to find the four worst locations and these were chosen for the floor murals.

Solution

Painted using specialised tarmac paints – primarily white, green and yellow, the artworks aim to encourage a sense of pride in the street, adding colour and dissuading those wanting to fly-tip.

Plants from the street were integrated into the design to make each mural unique and relevant. The illustrations were painted on pavements that were known from the council’s own website as flytipping hotspots, with the council’s permission.

Process

After using a clear masonry glaze, I painted the wall white, with black rectangle the same ratio as the newsreels of the time. I painted all white linework and text using a signpainters enamel paint.
